Title

Prayer(Salat) in Islam: A Model for Social and Cultural Development

Speakers

Dr. Walid Khayr

Dr. Neji BH Tahar

Abstract

Is prayer (Salat) the blue print of the project of prophecy that influences and directs social change? Is there a relationship of continuity between the prayer of Mohammad (PBUH) and that of Jesus, Moses, and Abraham (PBUT)?

In this workshop, the speakers will demonstrate how prayer evolved through the history of prophecy until it reached its perfection with Mohammad (PBUH) - a perfection that coincided with the perfection of revelation.

The Muslim prayer will be dissected, and each component will be analyzed to uncover its social and cultural implications. Such analysis will be the result of short presentations by the speakers, and comprehensive discussions in small groups by the participants. At the end, all the implications of prayer on the ideas, actions, and institutions of the society will be brought together to reconstruct the vision of Islam.

Objectives

  1. To create a culture of elevation, stimulate thoughts and reinvigorate an approach to simultaneously purify the soul and build the society.
  2. To articulate the “phenomenon of the Prophecy” and demonstrate the role of the prayer as a building block in that phenomenon.
  3. Uncover the social implications embedded in the prayer.

Al-Hajj: Mere Rituals or A Guide to a Comprehensive Way of Life?

Speakers

Dr. Walid Khayr

Dr. Neji BH Tahar

Abstract

Islamic thought leaders offer a fresh and enlightening approach. It is the intent of this workshop to expand on the classical meanings related to Hajj through a deep exploration of its history and rituals.

Another objective is to better appreciate the social and universal implications embedded in the Hajj experience, and demonstrate how the lessons of Hajj can be applied within the participants’ own communities. This workshop does NOT address the fiqh aspect of Al-Hajj and is not a step-by-step education session on how to perform Al-Hajj.

Objectives

  1. To create a culture of elevation, stimulate thoughts and reinvigorate an approach to simultaneously purify the soul and build the society.
  2. To articulate the “phenomenon of the Prophecy” and demonstrate the role of the du’a as a building block in that phenomenon.
  3. Uncover the social implications embedded in the du’a.
  4. Provide a framework for building/acquiring skills needed to incorporate the new ideas generated from the du’a discussions into our communities.

The Role of Supplication “Du’a” in Shaping the Human Being

Speakers

Dr. Walid Khayr

Dr. Neji BH Tahar

Abstract

Understanding the needs, hopes, and aspirations of the human being is a necessary prerequisite for understanding supplication “du’a”. The speakers in this workshop will demonstrate the compatibility between the human being and “du’a”.  The speakers will also show that “du’a” is the worship of the free human being who is continuously breaking the prison of the “self” and the prison of the status quo. Excerpts from traditional “du’a” will be analyzed during interactive breakout sessions. At the end of the workshop, the participants are expected to start building the skills needed to compose their own personal “du’a”.

Objectives
